Maybe its not a good thing, to set GalleryCacheDir to your DocumentRoot.
I did not set GalleryCacheDir to any value. The default 
is /var/tmp/Apache-Gallery/. The thumbs for /path/to/docroot/folder/image.jpg 
will be stored at /var/tmp/Apache-Gallery/path/to/docroot/folder/.
Apache::Gallery maps any request to a thumb (.../.cache/...) to the 
appropriate cache directory.

Im using Debian:
libapache-gallery-perl     0.9.1-1
libimage-imlib2-perl       1.02-1
libimlib2                  1.1.2-1
