You mean you put them in /gallery on your filesystem? Do you get a 404
when you go to http://localhost/gallery when all of ApacheGallery is
commented out of your apache config? Copy and paste from apache error
log would have been more useful. Include it when you reply.

You may want to consider adding something like this to your apache
config:
Alias /gallery /path/to/your/gallery/files/on/the/file/system

Looks like AG is running when you go to /gallery.
