Yes, I've noticed this too, though it hasn't bothered me enough for me
to actually fix it.

On closer inspection it manifests itself as follows:

Thumbnails DO get generated, but are placed in a wrong subdir.
Apache looks for the thumbs in the right (and thus wrong wrong subdir).

I would think that the bug is somewhere in sub cache_dir.
